About us

What we do

Apart from providing a rare opportunity for visitors to step back in time, our Museum collects and collates items and records from our district on an ongoing basis.  From the 1800s through to more recent times, we attempt to retain our history as a working exhibition that all will find interesting.

The Courthouse itself is one of the few intact courthouses remaining. Complete with incredibly well preserved timbers and furniture, including the Magistrate's bench and dock for the accused, this small place is just teeming with history.

The Macarthur & District Historical Society Inc is responsible for the careful and considered preservation of both the Courthouse itself and the Museum's items on display.

About the MACARTHUR HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Our long running Society is a Victorian Incorporated Association with a membership base of about 30 people who are passionate about the history of the Macarthur district.

Our Society is managed by a committee of volunteers:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • 3 General Members

We initiate interest in local history by organising community events such as Historic Marker Days, book launches, 'Back to' celebrations, guest speaker events and our annual AGM lunch.

Our collection

We regularly meet with other nearby Societies who are equally dedicated:

  • Portland
  • Koroit & District
  • Hamilton
  • Penshurst
